Curcumine werkt beter tegen reuma dan de ontstekingsremmer diclofenac. Tot dat besluit kwamen Indiase artsen die curcumine en diclofenac met elkaar vergeleken bij 45 reumapatiënten. Curcumine zorgde voor een lagere 'ziekteactiviteit' en voor minder zwelling en pijn. Een eigenaardige vaststelling was dat curcumine ook beter werkte dan een behandeling met curcumine en diclofenac.
Curcumine is de actieve stof uit kurkuma of geelwortel (Curcuma longa). Een betere werking tegen reuma is niet het enige voordeel: curcumine is ook veel veiliger dan diclofenac, een geneesmiddel uit de klasse van de niet-steroïdale ontstekingsremmers. In deze studies, en in vele andere studies, leidde het gebruik van curcumine niet tot ongewenste bijwerkingen, zelfs niet in hoge dosissen.
